An idea person…
By Sylvie Lemieux
The line manager is always on the lookout for good ideas. The objective? To find new products to develop, whether in response to a client request or to be one step ahead by proposing an innovative solution. It is therefore necessary for this individual to be abreast of the latest technological developments. To do so, this individual must attend exhibitions and participate in trade shows or other relevant scientific events.
Essentially, the line manager must build a bridge between the client and the team of researchers assigned to the different development projects. This individual analyzes the requests forwarded by the marketing department and decides whether or not these are feasible. If necessary, this individual contacts the client for more information. Depending on the case, he or she opts to develop a new prototype or to adapt an existing product.
Once the project has been accepted, he or she assesses labour requirements and designates a researcher as project manager. The line manager then meets with his or her development team, outlines the client's specifications and follows up on the work in accordance with schedules. He or she also ensures that the researchers have the necessary materials and components. This individual acts as a resource person in the event of technical difficulties.
During the course of the project, the line manager has regular discussions with the client to keep the latter informed about the project's evolution, and may even be called on to supervise the implementation of new products for the clientele. If problems arise, he or she must find the solutions to ensure that the work is successful. The line manager must also draft different technical documents, brochures or technical specifications for product use or maintenance.
A born leader
To effectively execute these tasks, the line manager must be an effective leader. He or she must have an evolved sense of communication and demonstrate tact and diplomacy owing to the fact that there is daily communication with the team of researchers and with clients.
This individual must also have keen technical competencies and demonstrate a heightened analytical spirit and troubleshooting abilities throughout the entire project. Moreover, this individual is able to popularize elaborate concepts. Expertise in French and English as well as knowledge of different computer applications is also part of the make-up of any good line manager.
Experienced researcher sought
In terms of training, the incumbent of this position normally holds a post-graduate degree in physical engineering with a specialization in optics or another relevant field. An application submitted by an individual who has completed a master's degree in the same field of study could also be considered. In all cases, five years of work experience as a researcher and one or more years in a similar position is added to the list of prerequisites.
