An essential link in the production chain…

By Sylvie Lemieux

The production technician plays an active role in the design or improvement of production processes. This individual's work revolves around the different tasks that must be executed in a specific order. First, the technician proceeds to analyze the needs based on the request he or she receives. This individual then identifies any significant variables, takes measures in the areas of mechanics, acoustics, optics or electricity, depending on the case at hand. The production technician then seeks solutions by consulting the technical documentation, checking the background, formulating hypotheses and subsequently proposing an alternative solution. Once this is accepted, he or she ensures its application, overseeing any necessary software updates as well as the modification of procedures or production materials.

The production technician also participates in tests carried out on new manufacturing processes. This individual must take different measurements, analyze them and compare them in accordance with the set objectives. He or she documents the different steps involved in the work by drafting reports, procedures or protocols. Once at the technological transfer stage, the technician must ensure that the personnel receive adequate training. He or she must also play a technical support role. Lastly, he or she ensures that this information is forwarded to the appropriate individuals.

The production technician also participates in shop work. Tasks include taking inventory of parts and components, and ordering any missing items. This individual may also be asked to execute different production operations such as assembly, the alignment of optical fibres, component connections, welding of electrical and electronic components, etc. He or she then tests the manufactured products and in the case of a malfunction, seeks the cause of the problem. For each product, the technician completes a control sheet identifying the components and elements used, the applied voltage and any other specifications.

Depending on the case, the technician may supervise the work of production personnel. Planning the work schedules for technicians, fitters and operators, training the team members and interns, and information follow-up then appear on this individual's list of tasks. He or she also provides technical support with regard to the operation of manufacturing equipment and procedures.

Methods and organization

The production technician must demonstrate numerous qualifications in order to successfully execute his or her tasks. This individual must have outstanding manual dexterity in addition to being orderly and methodical. Organizational skills, keen observation and an analytical mind are other necessary qualities. When faced with obstacles, this individual must be patient and persistent. While able to work autonomously, this individual must also enjoy teamwork. His or her supervision tasks require the ability to communicate and easily interact with others. Since there is little room for routine in his or her work, the production technician must adapt to different situations and demonstrate a propensity for learning. Sound knowledge of French and English are also necessary.

Several training options

Many different types of training can lead to this position, including a college diploma (DEC) in physical technology, electrical engineering, optics, mechanics or laboratory automation. A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering with a specialization in telecommunications may also be considered an asset. Moreover, at the entry level, work experience of 6 to 12 months in optics, mechanics or electronics procedures or techniques is required. Interesting possibilities for advancement exist.
